What kind of school is Hillhead High?
About Us >>> What kind of school....?
Hillhead High School is a six year comprehensive, non denominational, co-educational school in the West End of Glasgow. It is situated on Oakfield Avenue close to Glasgow University. The school dates back to 1885. The present building was opened in 1931 but was extensively refurbished and extended in 2000/01. Although the school has two gymnasia, a games hall and fitness suite it has no playing fields on campus but it does enjoy the use of the excellent sports ground in the local area.
In the past the school proved popular with parents resulting in placing requests which in first year used to amounted to around 70% of the intake. This changed at the time of the closure of Woodside Secondary School, giving us an additional five associated primaries making a total of seven and therefore fewer available places for parental request.
The school has a distinct international flavour with, in addition to significant numbers of Pakistani, Indian and Chinese students, over 30 other nationalities represented. The school is pleased with the good relationships among the various groups.
The High School is fully staffed in all departments and provides a balanced curriculum leading to a full range of SQA qualifications.

Personal & Social Education (PSE), Learning Support, Work Experience, Young Enterprise, and English as an Additional Language (EAL) provision are all available in the school. |
Most pupils continue into S5 and many also go on to complete S6 (around 17yrs of age). A wide range of extra curricular activities is available including rugby, basketball, volleyball, netball, cross-country running, athletics, cricket, orchestra and choirs etc and, in addition, the school operates a system of Minority Time Activities (MTA) as part of the curriculum. This gives an opportunity on Friday afternoons for pupils to sample many sporting and cultural activities.
Hillhead High School has as a major focus of its activities the development and encouragement of links with international communities. Given its population of over 34 different nationalities, it celebrates the diversity of its students and actively encourages opportunities to overcome the racist attitudes so often prevalent in the world today. As part of a comprehensive and on-going programme, the school encourages these links internally and externally.
