Standard Grade Craft & Design

The standard grade has 3 assessable elements;
- Design work, through a folio
- Practical work, through a finished item
- Knowledge & Understanding, through an exam

In 3rd year pupils learn about wood, metal and plastics, and how to carry out processes in a safe and methodical manner. Pupils also learn how to produce an expanded design folio.
An example of third year Acrylic work (plastics) is shown here. Pupils were asked to design and manufacture a clock using the Acrylic, which would appeal to a young person. (acrylic is already coloured and so designs can be influenced by the colour available)

The black circle at the back of the clock was made from thin foam, the white area is acrylic, and the detail is black marker pen.

A standard mechanism is supplied to the pupils at cost price.

In metalwork, various items may be manufactured without the need for full design work such as the keyring riveting exercise, or the hanging basket bracket; some may need designing such as the turned hammer.
In woodwork, along side folio and graphics work, an item such as a storage box or stool may be manufactured to give an appreciation of the work involved in the design and manufacture of a product.
Fourth Year
-------------
In Fourth Year pupils are given a design brief, usually based on a theme such as tables or boxes, or clocks, and are guided to produce an item of their own design and fashion.
Results
--------
Results are based on the 3 assessable elements given above.

A pass at Credit Level 1 or 2 is the usual entry qualification for the Higher Craft & Design course.

Some pupils prefer the practical side of the coursework and therefore choose Practical Craft Skills in fifth or sixth year.
