A report on the October 2006 FP Ladies Dinner
Well our Former Pupils Ladies Dinner was a great success. 100 ladies spent a great evening listening to the school days of Cameron Stewart who celebrated his 65th birthday last Wednesday....we listenened to tales from his first day at Cecil Street to former Pupil Days at the Rugby Club where he played in the F P 1st 's. 'Cammie' as he is known is the grandson of Will Fyffe the Scottish Comedian. At the close of the evening he was presented with a Birthday cake ...... after School Cammie went into the Newspaper world which took him to Manchester and London and back to Manchester where he had become Executive Sports Editor and a great friend of the late George Best. His wife Margaret and himself said not to believe all we read in newspapers as he was an extremely nice guy. Having retired early Cammie now is found close to his three grandchildren, twins Charles and Cameron and Christina.
......... next to take the floor was Marcia Pirie nee McKeand who took a different angle of her School days....the pranks and fun she had at schoool until about 4th year realising this really was no joke she needed to get marks to pass to enable her to continue and go to university.....Well what she got up to is not repeatable...I now know why I remembered her even tho' we were not in the same class but same year....taking her tricycle to primary school was some story and showed the patience of the teacher who knew exactly how to handle Marcia. Mr Scobie the Science teacher in secondary was well known to many of us and Marcia did not give him an easy day. By now as well as studies Marcia threw herself into every club available at School and she claims this is why she was chosen school prefect. Prefects were chosen by Head Teachers who did not know her except that she was a member of this society and that one.
Between the two guests there were many laughs and as I said a great evening was had by all. After School she attended Glasgow University where she was part of the HHS Mafia and duly appointed president of the Queen Margaret Union during the same period as the late Donald Dewar from Glasgow Academy and our 'Ming' Campbell. After scraping up a Science degree she went onto the LSE where she was joined with about 4 other HHS pupils. Once finished there she looked for employment and for a few years worked in London In 1968 she married David whom she had first met at University and instead of using a down payment on a house bought a boat. For the next 6-7 yrs she helped in building several other boats, sailing the Irish waters and West Coast of Scotland. Around 1978 saw her sell up and sail of round the world for a couple of years....this turned into 9yrs. Now she is in Cornwall and still renovating houses and building new boats and sailing European waters, community activities, more studying and tackling the job of writing a book.....which she succeeded in 1992 'Travellers on a Trade Wind' Has graduated at Art College, finalised the home building and completed boat no 5.....will she now get down to be an artist
To add to our night we were joined for the fist time by 3 new ladies ....young girls who had left the school in the past 3 yrs or so ....they had been approached by a member who attended the same Church and invited along ....I am sure we will see them again and hopefully some of their friends
Help is needed in the Committee level of the Dinner as we are all getting older and some of them have been on for over 30 yrs. New blood is needed and new faces with new ideas....does the challenge interest you? Sharing tales with other Former Pupils is most enjoyable and keeps you young!!!!
The Venue had to be changed this year due to double booking by the Swallow Hotel Paisley Rd West.....personally I think it worked out to our best as at The Hilton Grosvenor certainly did us proud The banqueting room was fine, suitable set out with School colours and crests....the meal was excellant .. and I think I will at this point praise Wendy Patrick, Joan Paton, Moffat Mackie and Margaret Burns for running about at such short notice to acquire a venue and to the rest of the committee for their part in the evening.
A letter was read out about the FP Ladies Hockey team who celebrate 100yrs and a Grand ball is to be held on 11 November.....did you play for the FP's....would you like to put on your posh dress or buy a new onw !!!... it is a black tie event, so that should be interesting seeing what types of dresses they can make from a black tie !! contact should be made to Pat Lang or Muriel Alexander or contact the school....golly I loved hockey but never played after school so I can not join in ....sounds like another good night.
Think I should stop now or else I will have taken up all of the site.
Think about joining us in 2008 - first Saturday in October (same every two years) or even better come along to our Committee meeting ....I will post next one on site or if you are interested contact me direct
A very happy former pupil and proud to be from HHS.
