Former Pupil Articles - from May 2001 to July 2001
There follows some articles emailed to us by former pupils. Some have photos, some haven't. We hope that you enjoy sharing with other pupils' memories of HHS.
Our family stayed at 30 Bradfield Ave, Kirklee [1938-1959]
I was in the school army cadets too. Most schools at the time had at least one cadet unit e.g. army, navy or air force. We wore our uniforms to school on a Friday, then marched around the playground, and did map reading, tactics etc etc after school. I still remember those jaggy uniforms which were very hot in the summer time. I will send a photo of the cadet group c1954, taken in front of the school.... when I find it !
Best wishes, Bob Smart.

Hello Again, I came across the attached.

Clip reads; A Breakaway from scrum during the Hillhead High School match with Glasgow High School at Hughenden today. The Hillhead forward dodged the tackle of the fallen player [pictured on right], but was himself dropped by the advancing Anniesland man.
The Bulletin image was taken by a staff photographer of the ' Evening Citizen' on Saturday, November 2nd, 1946. Centre falling with the ball is Ian Ross, centre closing is David A M. Todd, upper top right Ronald J. Stirling. I'm happy to report that HHS won this match, score Hillhead High,12; Glasgow High, 11.

The Photograph of the 1947 1st XV, was taken in front of the Main Entrance, you would have to have known Dr William J. Merry, personally to have understood what an incredibly fine man, and superb Headmaster he was. I'm grateful to this day that he was there when I was !

Please find attached a copy of my class photograph from about 1968/9. The picture was taken outside the boys Gym in the boys playground just about where the Tech Block was built. Our Form Teacher was Mr Dunlop, who taught Physics at the time. The Headmaster was Walter Wyatt at this time. I can still remember all the names of the people in the picture and would be glad to hear from any of them.
Best regards, Roger Balfour
I have fond memories of the school and my classmates. Hopefully the refurbishment will mean no more snow/ice on the open corridors and windows that can actually open AND shut properly!
kind regards, Kath Wilson (nee Johnstone)

Hi. I was at Hillhead from 1981-1986 ( I was Susan Foster then) I'd love to hear how everyone's getting on. I can remember the rugby sevens..although we didn't do that well we still had the best looking team! Do you still have the tannoy system..somehow I always seemed to get my name mentioned..and not for the best of reasons !
Cheers Susan Taylor
I was at Hillhead Primary from January 1951 to June 1958 (having my birthday in September meant I had 6 months of attending school in the afternoon, followed by 2 years of mornings only in "Infants" proper) and the Secondary school from 1958-64. I played in the school orchestra at the start of its glory days (i.e. I remember when we kept being beaten in the Glasgow Music Festival by the High School for boys). Currently I teach English at Dunoon Grammar School. e-mail: mcintosh@maura.demon.co.uk

This was taken in front of the main door in the summer of 1954. The commanding officer was Major Prentice, seen on the front row. He doubled up as a maths teacher too ! I cannot remember any of the other names ! I still have my Glengarrie with the HLI badge on it ! The uniforms were made of such course material... ... When we went on exercises to Mugduck moor, we were issued with thunderflashes and live rounds...it was a wonder that no one was killed ! ...No one knew about health and safety rules in those days !
