ART & DESIGN - Short Course

Art & Design - S2 Course Choice

SHORT COURSES

The course is a two year course in which pupils must complete two different kinds of work. In one year they must complete a course which deals with two-dimensional work and in the other year they must complete a course dealing with three-dimensional work. In Hillhead, we do one course in printmaking and another on constructions.
The printmaking course makes use of polystyrene tiles or lino in order to create the printed image. Pupils study aspects of their environment in order to create drawings which form the starting points for creating images suitable for making into prints.
The sculpture course explores a range of forms that can be made from paper and card. It leads to the creation of a final piece using papier mache.

There is no written work in the short courses and generally very little homework.
The entire course work is assessed at the end of each year. The art and design department makes an initial assessment and then a representative sample of work is sent to the Scottish Qualifications Authority for moderation. The results of these assessments are shown on the S.Q.A certificate awarded at the end of fourth year.
There is no grading of the short course awards; pupils either pass the entire unit for that year, by completing all aspects to a satisfactory standard or they fail the unit. The final certificate will show the results under the headings 2D Composition and 3D Construction.
