Choosing Art ?

Course Choice information for Second Year.

Art and Design courses for 3rd & 4th year.

There are two courses available for pupils who want to continue with art and design through third and fourth year.

One course is called Standard Grade and the other is called the Short Course. Each course is certificated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

SEE LINKS BELOW for both Standard Grade and Short Course...

Both courses demand an interest in the subject, especially in drawing, which forms an essential part of each course. Pupils applying to the Standard Grade course should have demonstrated enthusiasm for the subject and be willing to work hard at building knowledge and skill across a range of activities.

The Standard Grade course demands a fair amount of reading and writing about art and design as well as practical work. Pupils interested in the Standard Grade course must be willing to deal with this aspect of the work. They must also be prepared to do regular homework in order to improve their skills.

The Standard Grade course is the best preparation for the Intermediate and Higher levels of the new Higher Still course. Higher Art and Design is an accepted general qualification for university and college courses. It also forms the start of more specialised art and design education for those seeking art and design courses in colleges or art schools.

Applications for college courses are made from either fifth or sixth year. Applications to art schools are usually made from sixth year, by students doing a Sixth Year Studies course. This course will be called Advanced Higher, in the new Higher Still programme. Every year we have a number of senior pupils who successfully apply to art schools and colleges to continue their studies.
